Trail Miles: 95
Highest Point: Prospect Rock, 1,433 feet
The Appalachian Trail passes less than 50 miles north of New York City, but you would never know it by the scenery as the trail passes through the beautiful woodlands of the Hudson River Valley. However, you might know it based on the number of people. Because the trail is so close to the large populations nearby and because it is relatively flat and easy to hike, this length of trail gets a lot of use from day hikers and section hikers.
The New York portion of trail holds two important distinctions. One is that the trail passes its lowest point here, only 124 feet above sea level near where the Bear Mountain Bridge crosses the Hudson River. The other distinction is that the first stretch of the AT to be completed was here in New York. In 1923, a stretch of trail in Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks was completed.
