Connecticut

Trail Miles: 45
Highest Point: Bear Mountain, 2,316 miles

As the AT leaves New York, it enters the only region that I have not personally visited: New England.  New England as a whole is not a huge region, but it does contain over a third of the trail.  In reality, the New England section of the AT should really be viewed as two separate sections: Southern New England and Northern New England.  They really are two distinctly different hiking experiences.

The Connecticut portion of the trail is typical of the Southern New England sub-region.  The hiking is at times strenuous but most of the ascents and descents are short in duration.  It passes through a very scenic area along the Housatonic River Valley, filled with many pastoral and picturesque scenes.  For thru-hikers behind schedule, this is a section where lost time can be made up rather quickly.
